Wang Yanru

Since 2004 Wang Yanru has produced paintings sharing a theme of insects and birds. Her work features a rather objective reference as opposed to nature. It expresses her personal thoughts of growth but also the worries about materialism and the consumptionism that is threatening nature. She questions if China, which is wrapped in the system of western values, can gain the comfort of the soul through the traditional culture.

China has a long tradition of paintings of flowers and birds as e.g. in the Song Dynasty. Wang Yanru refers to that tradition but expresses herself in a contemporary way.
